Nicodemus Wilderness Project
This project was constructed by myself and my friends John, James, and Ryan; we were all a part of our senior project. At Ledyard High school I was accepted through an agricultural science and technology program. Through this program I was introduced to an entirely new world that consisted of agriculture. My entire four years there I mainly participated in environmental science classes, horticulture, floral design, greenhouse management, and overall care for plants and taking care of our environment. This project was based on what I had learned at Ledyard high school and I was allowed to create any project of my choice to share with my class. After long consideration I decided that I would really enjoy constructing my own herb and vegetable garden. We began work immediately by planning and researching. We made list of the herbs and vegetables we wanted to plant in our garden. After weeks of research on how to maintain a garden our teacher finally granted us the right to work outside. We were faced with the unfortunate reality that the weeds must be fully removed before we begin planting, and our garden was taken over by an invasive species of weeds. The weeding portion of our project exceeded most of our time causing us to be outside for hours and hours throughout the week. When we finally finished weeding we had to till the ground to ensure that the weeds will not kill our newly planted herbs and vegetables. When it finally came time to plant in our garden I was overcome with excitement and overall achievement. I was so excited to be planting in a garden I could call mine due to all of my hard work along with some of my best friends
Sadly we weren’t allotted enough time to plant everything that I wanted. But our garden did consist of; tomatoes, bell peppers, broccoli, thyme, lavender, lettuce, basil, pine shrubs, and chives. I think that it is important that our garden is maintained well and thoroughly because even though it is small compared to some other projects but we put forth a lot of effort in this project and it looks so nice, we definitely accomplished our projected goal for this garden that can now be viewed by incoming students for a long time coming. This garden will benefit out community because it makes the back area by the barn so much more appealing and it will grow massively over time especially with the lavender and bell peppers. We managed to take a lot of photos of all the plants we planted and we would be glad to send them in, I appreciate this opportunity to share this project with you and I hope that you consider me for this scholarship.
Thank you, Markeisia
