Nicodemus Wilderness Project -- Global Registry of Apprentice Ecologists

NATIVE TREE PLANTING

I was researching for my Girl Scout Bronze award when I found the Nicodemus Wilderness Project, which would be a perfect match since my theme is the environment.
My bronze award theme and the Nicodemus Wilderness Project were a perfect fit.
Out of the choices I picked native tree planting and river clean up. My mom and I thought it would be a good idea to do the native tree planting at the Chattahoochee Nature Center.

The Chattahoochee Nature Center is a place that offers educational programs for children and adults about conservation, water, plants, and animals. They also take care of injured animals such as birds of prey.

When I planted my trees some people from my troop came to help. We planted 13 trees.
Thatâ€™s a lot of trees! We planted 5 Sugar Maples, 5 Shumard Oaks, and 3 Red Oaks. We put the trees in the Georgia Wetland area on the grounds of the Center. After we planted the trees I mulched and weeded the area.

RIVER CLEAN UP

The creek we cleaned was the Vickery Creek in Roswell Georgia. It is a tributary to the Chattahoochee River. My family and I also cleaned the water shed area near the creek. We picked up 4 black trash bags full of trash.

WHAT I LEARNED

I learned that:
You plant native trees so they will not take over and destroy other native plants. Native trees are important to wildlife.

I also learned that you need to keep water shed areas clean because the things that get thrown or put in the water shed will get into the water and kill or harm things that live in the creek. The stuff we picked up included old batteries and car oil containers which can contaminate the water supply.
