My senior year I joined my High School’s FPS team and started becoming much more involved in my school and community because of it. Each year a topic is chosen on which we can improve the current circumstances of that issue. This year we focused on reducing carbon emissions of our school and community and raising awareness of global warming.
So far we have replaced light fixtures in one classroom to more energy efficient light sources and plan to do at least 3 more. We are currently trying to distribute energy saver light bulbs to the entire community and have spoken to town officials about the importance of conserving energy and reducing the affects of Global warming. On December 8, 2007 our Future Problem Solving team organized our first Polar Bear Plunge and invited everyone to attend. We took donations to help fund our project. We got some people together who were willing to take a dip in the cold winter waters of North Beach to support the cause. Though the turnout was not huge all who participated were greatly appreciated and really displayed a sense of concern for the environment. We wrote letters to important officials of the state and the country to inform them of our cause. Also we reached out to the entire coastal bend area by speaking with the local ABC news station. On the day of the plunge me along with three other plungers were interviewed and were able to address the public about our cause and inform them about this growing problem of global warming.
Me and other students of the Sinton High School FPS team hope to accomplish much more this year. We anticipate lowering energy usage and creating a greater deal awareness of our environmental issues.
