The area of Pinones in the town of Loiza is located on the north coast of Puerto Rico, about 11 miles east of San Juan, Puerto Rico. It has a two lane road that connects the city of San Juan and the municipality of Loiza. This traditional town gives a magnificent opportunity to the public to experience a natural environment which includes boardwalks, kiosks, and towers of observation with signs of the natural and cultural resources of the area. This area is visited by many tourists, surfers, and people from the island because of its amazing beaches. Unfortunately this coast needed some litter removal.

I decided to clean the Tocones Beach which is a surfer’s area on the 15 of September which is the International Coastal Cleanup day. The work started at 7:00am assembling the materials and giving information to volunteers. I had the help from a local company which facilitated me with T-shirts, water, bags, and gloves for this project. Once the cleanup started we found various types of litter including big toys, cans, and a mattress frame, among other things. We were disgusted when we found the trash cans flooded with trash, since we concluded that they were never cleaned we empty them. The cleanup was finished by 10:30am so that the town workers could load the trash in their trucks.

After the cleanup we discovered that there have to be installed various trash receptacles all around the beach since there was only two at the entrance. Another is that this should be done regularly in order to keep our coasts.

This experience was amazing because when I saw the number of volunteers it showed me that other people care too. To see all those people working together for one cause gives you more energy to continue working for the environment. I was also amazed by the great number of young people who volunteered, even though it was a Saturday in the morning that they could be sleeping.

The Apprentice Ecologist Initiative gives the chance to individuals to join a great cause. Is a great way to teach future generations about the conservation of our world.
