As an eleven year Girl Scout “veteran,” the monumental steps I took towards earning my Girl Scout Gold Award were tremendous accomplishments for my community. My project, “Don’t DISPOSE Your Talent,” included painting trash cans on the beach for the beach in order to diminish pollution; some bright colors and even uplifting messages on the cans were used in order to motivate people to keep clean what they are fortunate to have. With the coast of Mississippi recovering from both Hurricanes Katrina and Isaac and the BP Oil Spill, the goal was to take the strain off the shore. The beach along Hancock and Harrison counties of Mississippi were the designated areas for the placing of the cans. The actual painting of the cans was done on at an all-girls high school with the assistance of the all-boys boarding school. Cans, paint, and paintbrushes were supplied by my project advisor, the Harrison County Beautification Commissioner. My project assisted with the pollution issue on the beach, making it cleaner and more suitable for nature, residents, and tourists. I encouraged each person to make the trash can they worked on their own when decorating it; uplifting quotes, pictures, and other signs of personality were put on the cans. This project was all about expression, originality, and optimism. Through this project, my skills of encouragement, devotion, and care were used. My project resulted in a vision of a clear beach for generations to come; hopefully, this event will affect people of all walks of life.
