INTRODUCTION:
The site I cleaned up was Yalawa quarter located closely behind Deputy-Governor’s office, opposite Juma’at mosque along Garu road in Dutse local government area of JIgawa state. This quarter has a green park of about 100x500m. In the green park alone, five places of refuse dumping sites were identified. And inside the quarter many dumping area and lack of proper drainage system was identity.
I choose to work here because it is close to many public places: the Juma’at mosque, Deputy Governor’s office and public football pitch [stadium].
ACTIVITIES
1. Environmental sensitization-
I organized the community people and CBO and enlightened them about the sensitivity of our environment. The sensitization was supposed to be carried out on 1st July, but due to the fact that I was not able to gather them all together on that day, the community suggested I carry it out 14th and 15th July 2011. The targeted groups are: the gate keepers, community-based organizations and both men and women of that community. The community appreciated the sensitization favourably and promised to turn out in mass when the clean up time comes.

2. Environmental sanitation:
A number of spades, rakes and big garden forks were provided by both community men and JISEPA members who were in attendance with their white HILUX Van boldly written JISEPA on both sides. As soon as we gathered the wastes it was packed into the van. The sanitation was carried out on Friday morning at exactly 9.00 am, that is 22nd July 20011. Large number of people turned out for the exercises. Despite the large turnout, many felt that it was the right of government to do it and not theirs. I personally participated actively as it shown in picture taken in the site.
CONCLUSION:
My plan for effective sustainability of this exercise is to keep in touch with the gate keepers, and community-based organisation [CBO], basically ensuring that method of sanitation is continually executed.
One of the positive effects of my project is that the odor level within the area declined drastically. People are now free to have fresh air in their domain. And the declination of odor also implies that level of germs and associated diseases were equally declined too.
My mindset has changed positively since I carried out this project. I have become more aware of human factors causing environmental degradations.
RECOMMENDATION:
1. I recommend that four refuse dumping site be installed in that area.
2. Waste containers, bin or drums must be place in this various refuse dumping site.
3. I recommend that the green park be fenced to avoid misuse of the place.
4. I recommend that government should try to put up proper drainage channel for that area.
5. I recommend that government should also put up a media program on air to keep on sensitizing people toward the fragility of our environment and means of keeping it tidy.
