I am a young man and an Eagle Scout. Ever since I joined the Cub Scouts, the environment has become central to many of my favorite pastimes and endeavors. I did not choose to do a project because of the importance of clean air, water or natural resources. I did not choose to do a project because of my love of camping, sledding, backpacking and canoeing. I did a project because of the natural inspiration of nature. An entire people can be engaged and enlightened by something as large as the melting of glaciers or the vastness of the Grand Canyon or Niagara Falls. A child can be lit up with excitement because of the simplicity of the fall colors all around her or the drop of a snowflake onto her tongue.

It is, as a result, my duty and my pleasure to do everything I can to help and protect the wilderness around me from the natural inclinations of man. For my Eagle Scout Service Project, I led thirty five men and women in a project to enrich a mixed deciduous forest area behind my middle school. The area had a small, worn down trail that my group helped to reinvigorate. Ten birdhouses and robin nesting shelves were created and mounted in the trees around the trail. We created a nature guide and made posts that indicated over 45 unique trees and organisms to teachers. We blazed a 175 yard trail to make the existing trail more accessible to students of the middle school. We corralled an area of the invasive Lily-of-the-Valley to allow for the growth of the original species. Most importantly, we renewed the existing trail by clearing debris, spreading 250 cubic yards of wood chips and lining the trail with logs.

The project helped to maintain a healthy environment and allowed science teachers an area to teach their students about ecology and conservation in a real, up-close and personal way. By refurbishing the area, students are now more likely to take interest in the wildlife around them. As a scout, I was always awed by the processes and mechanizations of nature itself. I loved the sounds and the sights that came when I slept in the forest. I want to do my part in making sure that every kid had that chance to be inspired and to be overwhelmed by their natural surroundings. My project is only a start to my ambitions. With my education and with my experiences, I hope to expand my vision to change my generation’s attitude towards it environment. My initial interest in the environment sparked the beginnings of my project. The execution of my project and the vision of my past results have created in me a burning desire for me to do more to help my community and help my environment in the years to come.

It is exciting to read all that you have been able to achieve with your limited resources, I believe if we all can be conscious of our environment, the way you people do, these environmental problems we are facing today can be eradicated, or at least reduced. We must continue to encourage ourselves.
Meanwhile, I just started an NGO in Gambia base on environmental issues, all assistance and exposure from you is needed. Thanks.
