I am full time at Bakersfield College, CA majoring in biology. My recreational activities include running, bicycling, drawing and, on rare occasion, horse back riding. As the first person in my family to attend college I strive to give my younger siblings a good example. By demonstrating leadership, responsibility, and honesty my younger brothers and sisters will feel compelled to make a difference. I chose option I (Trash Clean up-Stop Pollution) as my task because most of the earth’s contamination can be stopped by simply recycling and putting trash where it ought to go. Since the Earth loses more trees than industrialized cities daily, plants become increasingly vital and scarce by the minute to wildlife. Therefore, the parks and un-industrialized landscapes which remain must be kept clean to encourage wildlife to thrive near human populations.
Lamont Community Park, CA sits in the middle of the small town named Lamont. Nueva Continuation High School, Lamont Elementary School and the small town public library serve as its borders. As a result, the Lamont Community Park regularly becomes flooded with litter. The trees, bushes and high grass camouflage the squirrels, birds, wild mice and garden snakes which call this park their home. Unfortunately, as more people keep migrating into Lamont, the wildlife habitat becomes threatened by the trash that keeps overflowing. In summary, Lamont’s wildlife becomes increasingly endangered daily.
My family and I got three sturdy plastic bags: one for cans, another for glass and the last one for wrappers and paper. We started cleaning the park at 8 a.m and completed at 11 a.m. During our cleaning some people started helping us which really motivated us to keep going. For this reason, I believe my family and I accomplished pollution awareness by our simple act.
Taking care of the Lamont Community Park should be highly enforced. Since the park directly faces the Lamont Boys&Girls Club and the Lamont public library, much of the community’s youth uses the park as a retreat and escape from home to just relax and enjoy being a kid. It grieves my heart to see the only park in the community littered and overflowing with trash. Lamont Community Park should be beautiful and charismatic reflecting the people who inhabit it. In summary, the Lamont Community Park needs a change.
Since most of the communities youth (as mentioned earlier) and small children consider the park their haven, I feel that our project helped ease the community. Especially the mothers who constantly worry that their children may get hurt by the hidden shards of glass in the sandbox or accidentally mistake a cigarette butt for gum (since small children have a habit of tasting unknown objects my family and I cleaned around the sandbox very carefully). If we keep the park well-kept wild life will be motivated to stay in the park so children can hear the blue jays sing their morning hymns and admire the squirrels’ undeniable display of speed and agility around the trees. Not only that but keeping animals around gives plants a way to transfer pollen. The animals who inhabit the park also keep other species from overpopulating and exploiting resources. For this reason, we all need one another on earth. The snakes keep the rodent population controlled while the birds moderate the snake community. As this cycle continues, everything on earth stays moderated and under control in its niche. Therefore, keeping the Lamont Community Park clean must be enforced because most of Lamont’s wildlife and youth depend on this last piece of industrialized landscape.
