I am currently a sophomore at Madison Area Technical College in Madison, WI. I was recently accepted to finish my bachelor’s degree at American University in Washington, DC. I still have applications pending at George Washington University and The College of William and Mary. I am planning on enrolling in one of these schools in January, where I will be working towards receiving a degree in environmental studies with minors in political science and history. With these degrees I hope to obtain a law degree and either practice environmental law or work as an environmental lobbyist.
The past two summers I have been a concessionaire in America’s National Parks. This last summer I worked as an outdoor expert in Grand Teton National Park, but the summer before worked as a host in Glacier National Park and that experience changed everything. Glacier National Park opened my eyes to a world that had been all around me. More importantly, Glacier rekindled a spirit in my body I had thought I had lost forever
After I graduated from high school, I decided it was best to take a year off of to travel and figure out what I wanted to do with my life. This year ended up turning into four years, and instead of traveling I ended made one of the biggest mistakes of my life and got involved in the party scene. Eventually my mind, body, and soul felt tired and drained from partying. I would attempt everything I used to love before partying, but to no avail. Then I began searching to recapture the “spark” in my life.
One fateful day I was on the internet and came across a website with concessionaire jobs at various National Parks. As I was scrolling through the list of jobs, I came across a nice restaurant offering employment in Glacier National Park. When I was child my family took a trip out there, and I remember just how absolutely beautiful the park was. There was no way I could pass up this opportunity to fill out an application to work in the park.
A few weeks later I was offered a job. At first I was reluctant to accept the job. It was going to be a change from everything I had known so far. I was going to be living in a small cabin with six people I have never met. There was going to be wildlife wandering around my cabin including grizzly bears. Lastly, I was going to be thousand miles away from everyone I knew and cared about.
Luckily for me I had family who convinced me a change and an adventure might be just what I needed. They were right. Glacier opened my eyes to another world I could have only dreamt about before. I was able to spend my days off climbing mountains and camping in the wild.
During my time in Glacier I developed a passion for nature. I wanted to learn everything there was about the environment. I am fascinated by every aspect, from why Indian paintbrush only grows in cooler climates, to how pesticides are affecting local wildlife.
Besides learning about nature I have become active in the protection of our environment. I ride public transportation, I buy organic foods, I have a garden, and I am an active member in the Sierra Club.
If I am accepted I look forward to taking my passion for the environment and using it to obtain a degree in environmental studies and eventually go obtain my law degree. I want to use both of these degrees to work as an environmental lobbyist or to practice environmental law. Hopefully, I can help protect America’s natural resources for future generations to enjoy.
I hope this essay has given you the additional information you need to set me apart from the other applicants. I also hope you learned how Glacier National Park changed my life for the better.
