Essay on planting trees
By: Megan

I had the wonderful privilege of going to Mexico with my school. We visited a small town of about 300 people. The town was called, “Mayto”. Mayto was a very poor town and they relied a lot on trees for shade.

The main reason we really went to Mexico was to help save the sea turtles. The sea turtles, like the Olive Ridley and the Pacific Green sea turtle, are becoming extinct. We went to a camp in Mayto to help them out. The camp provides safety from humans that try sell them and from any creatures that could kill them as the turtles hatch and make their way to the ocean. While we where there we saw birds, sand crabs, and many other beach creatures.

One of the days that we went on a interesting walk through the rain forest. We saw all kinds of creatures. Such as millipedes, frogs, grasshoppers, beetles, birds, katydids, and even a Gila Monster. It was amazing to see all the different creatures in their natural habitats. We also saw all kinds of plants that you would never see in St. Louis, like a cactus. I love to see cactus, because they are so unique to where I live. The rainforest was amazing and beautiful.

The next day we planted a tree called the Primavera. First, we prepared the soil and dug up the dead trees, and then we planted the tree in its new home. We planted over 150 trees. I had a lot of fun planting the trees. It was interesting because I found more about them. It was rewarding to help the small town of Mayto, Mexico.

What I learned was that trees are very important to the humanity. They help people and the ecosystem, provide oxygen, and give shade to people. Planting a new tree today can help thousands of people over the next 50 to 100 years. Every time people take a trip they should plant a tree in that place. The more people respect that trees are special, and take care of them the better everyone’s life will be. Then perhaps, people would not cut down so many trees.

That is why we planted more trees in Mayto, Mexico. We planted them in a small town in the town square where we knew the people respect the trees and enjoy them. The people in the town all help work together to keep their home nice and safe. The trees are important in helping them with life.

This program meant a lot to me. We worked very hard with very few comforts we were used to at home, but it was worth it. I leaned a lot about trees and plants. I also learned how important trees can be to people. That is why if I win the money for the essay I will give it to the Mayto Sea Turtle Camp. This has been an amazing experience that I will never forget. Thank you
