One of the greatest threats to civilization in today’s society is terrorism. The destruction of our planet and everything included within is the greatest fear of world leaders. Scientists, ranging from ecologists to physicists to biologists, are especially concerned with the threat of bioterrorism because it involves manipulating natural elements into that of a lethal weapon. Many warring countries have developed methods of mass killing that involve releasing poisonous and hazardous materials into public areas. These substances include various forms of toxins, bacteria, diseases, viruses, and other harmful organic materials.

My project was not the typical environmental activity of planting trees, cleaning up beaches, or fundraising for awareness. It involved helping scientists and engineers formulate a way to counteract bioterrorism and prevent the destruction of our sacred Earth. I assisted a biotech company, which shall remain anonymous, in its endeavors to build a machine that could detect airborne pathogens. I helped run assays that tested the efficiency of their prototypes in identifying and calculating levels of different items like Botulinum Toxin, Anthrax, and Ricin.

This internship project made me realize the dangers of abusing nature’s creation. If people were ever to release such pathogens into the world, the effects would be deleterious. Not only would humans cease to exist, but also all plant and animal life would be destroyed permanently. I hope my involvement furthered the company’s effort to stop bioterrorism and help save the world.
