In the blackened scars that mar the forests around my home, the stiff green stalks and yellow flowers of scotch broom, an invasive plant, litter the scorched landscape. Not only is it highly flammable, but the extensive root system of scotch broom easily outcompetes native saplings and shrubs that are needed to help the ecosystem recover. To combat this green invader, I host native plant parties. First we remove trash in the local nature preserve, then we remove invasive plants. For younger kids, I demonstrate cultivating native plants using seeds and clippings and showing the kids in my area, and how to remove scotch broom safely. Then they try. In the photo I've collected yarrow to dry for seeds for a younger ages plant party. One of the most incredible things is seeing kids with their hands in the dirt and joy in their eyes as they make a mess trying to make the world a better place.
