I started a compost program at my high school where the organic waste that leaves the cafeteria is collected and transported to a local community garden rather than thrown away. The project provides an opportunity for our school body consisting of over 1,200 students and staff to reduce the amount of waste we produce. The project also allows for an educational opportunity that gets the study body excited and involved in sustainable waste management and take part in stewardship of our planet. It was a tedious process that involved the filling out and approval of a PTSA grant, which enabled the purchase of supplies. The project also involved communication with community members and leaders regarding the placement of the compost. The final step was convincing those within the school administration that this project would allow for not only an environmentally friendly alternative to throwing all food away but would also serve as an educational opportunity regarding environmentally friendly actions that students could begin implementing within their own lives. The project took much longer than expected to put into place and there were financial and practical problems along the way, but with daily persistence I started the first compost program at our high school and opened up a conversation regarding the actions we take everyday and their impact on our environment.
