I am an inhabitant of a city in far northern areas of Pakistan. Gilgit, is a very beautiful city having rich natural beauty. Particularly, I live in Mujahid colony Konodass Gilgit and this is the same area where we conducted our project. Initially, I was not interested in conducting any kind of project but later on I felt that helping out others also helps us.
Konodass is one of the dense populated areas in Gilgit, people from different areas live here as a result of which a diverse society is formed. Generally, it is said that Diversity is strength, but here it is not like that. I do not know why people living here are not the caring ones to the environment and to each other. Although, they keep their own houses neat and clean but they just throw all the waste (plastics, cans, wrappers and etc) outside their houses; on to the roads and to the water vessels. This causes the blockage of water which then contaminates on the streets and roads, it does hinder the everyday activities. These roads are so muddy and dirty that they are not able to walk on. When wind blows it is common to see plastic bags and wrappers sailing in the air.
It has been a month or so since we started our effort (project) for helping out others. Our aim was to remove the waste out of the water vessels and to gather the thrown waste and help the Municipal committee to remove the waste out of the city. Initially, we were just two, we started to remove the waste out of the water vessels infront of our houses but later on our number was grown, and we spread our project to the street level where mainly on Sundays we get together and remove the trash and clean up the water vessels. We were been appreciated by the other members of the society. We were successful in accomplishing our aim an estimated 100kgs of trash was removed with the help of municipal committee. But we are thinking of extending this effort to the city level in the future. This will help people on larger scale and more people will get involved in this effort gradually.
It is important to take care of our area, if we do not do that then the roads will again get muddier and dirtier which is indirectly creating problems to us. The thrown waste may get contaminated and this can also give birth to many diseases and infections. Although our project is in its progressive stages but still it is benefiting our community by providing clean streets to walk on and clean water vessels for steady flow of the water. I am a student and I go to school by foot. Before our project was started it was difficult to walk down the streets to reach the school but after our project was conducted it is not that much difficult as before. It has helped the area to some extent.
As I mentioned earlier that initially I was not interested in conducting any kind of project but when I found that internationally young people are involved in their own projects in keeping the environment neat and clean I then realized that I also have to be a part of this program and so I conducted my Apprentice ecologist project in my area. My project not just helped the other people in the society but it also helped me realize that we have to take care of area where we are living not only our houses it also enhanced my horizon of thinking. It has inspired me to continue the effort even on larger scale in the future.
