I am always a student who are always fond of nature and you can call me as a Environmental-friendly nerd. And I will tell you stories about myself and my Apprentice Ecologist project established in a foreign country-United States of America but successfully drawn over 30 students in the college including both international and local students in action.

Before we start, let me introduce how I came up with the idea of creating the project.

I am a international student from Hong Kong and I have been chosen and indulged in a Scholarship aided trip to Switzerland to investigate how people earn happiness.Leading three teammates, conducting sumptuous surveys and interviews with the locals and traveling in the ‘Land of Happiness’.By our relentless approach of generalizing data,I realized one most crucial criteria contributing to Swiss’s happiness, and all of the human’s happiness is`Nature Environment’.Even the near-to-perfect Swiss health care and welfare policies, the astounding food culture, and not to mention the lofty income earned by Swiss citizens were below single criteria-Nature Environment.

I am amazed and afflicted by the Swiss’s ambiance and the people’s conscious caring towards the environment they are living in.And it it a invigorating trip that brings me eyesight and the broadened horizon that allow me to realize the importance of Sustainable Development and Environmental Protection. As I really desire to preserve this great scenery, the stunning beauty of the nature to our future generation and beyond. The azure blue skies, the sprouting green plants and forests, also the stunning abundance of the lakes and ocean...These really make me enthused and committed to protect them and allow our future generation to have this great planet to live in and thrive. So I am determined to found an Environmental Protection Club in United States, the land of opportunities. And this became my fundamental source of motivation to bring my Club, and also my dream to thrive and came true.

When I came to America this year at Autumn,I started the Environmental Resources Conservationists right away when I am a College Freshman. It is an Eco-friendly club promoting doing green projects and Environmental-friendly service learning and volunteering programs. At first,I am able to recruit 28 members on my first recruiting event of the Club.I started reaching out to a Biology professor to invite her to be our adviser and ask for more support about organizing environmental protecting events.
Also,I am able to contact staffs at our college to organize events combining volunteering and implementing green ideas in college.Further more,I am making a proposal for implementing a promotional campaign in our school at that time.Abundance of motivations and leadership is required to finish the tasks as being the president of the Club is not easy, but I managed to balance my study time and the time spent in Club organizing.

At first,I never thought this idea will work with only my passion towards the environment. But after the joining of our adviser and lots of fellow Eco-friendly students,I am able to lead my club members to join various environmental protecting campaigns in the state including the Make a difference Day(King 5 News had make an interview and made a broadcast of it on October 22nd)

And a long term community environmental project called Green Puyallup, which is aimed to restore local ecosystem and remove invasive species through community stewardship

And I have built my own reputation of being an Environmental friendly leader,so I wanted to use my influence in the campus to invite more students to be a part of contributing to the environment. At that time,my professor informed me about a fellow student that is very motivated about protecting the environment and she is planning to organize a frequent event to contribute to the environment. So we started to communicate and I started to invite members to join our project called Garry Oak Woodland Restoration Program, protecting the Garry Oak Trees.

Garry Oak Trees,or know as the Quercus Garryana,is an endangered species in Washington state and we are protecting it by removing the invasive species including the British Ivy,which drains the nutrition from the plant and caused the depletion of nutrition in soil and caused the Garry Oak Trees’ mortality)
I am cooperating with the fellow student in the past Fall Quarter and we are planning to extend this program to twice a week in the coming Quarter.
I believe protecting certain species is not solely protecting single species from harm,it is way more than about protecting only the trees.Protecting species that provides habitat, water and food sources such as the Garry Oak Tree will means that small animals such as rodents and plants in the area will be protected and fed.And in a large extent, the whole eco-system with in the community will be secured and sustained. It is an insurance for the whole community.Protecting the environment is protecting the future generations of humanities.

I believe that students that participate in this event will gain insights through protecting the Oak Tree. When they see how their work contributed and helped the oak trees to grow, they will savor the same happiness and kinship that I earned from being a nature protector and an appreciator. They will teach their kids about environmental protection, and more than that, the kinship will pass on to future teenagers and to the country in the future to benefit people living in the earth.
