The coexistence of nature and the modern human- the ultimate goal of every environmentalist, to live in complete sustainability and harmony with our surroundings. Peace with our surroundings stems from allowing freedoms of humanity to exist without placing strains on wildlife. MVHS’s school-wide recycling program promotes this raw synthesis of the common man to the great outdoors, supporting a world where sustainability is not compromised for everyday comforts. Waste reduction is a way of supporting the world’s capacity of manufacturing and consumption, while ensuring the proper disposal of unused materials. The recycling program at Mission Viejo High School, although a small act of waste reduction and conservation, is proof that the implementation of sustainable practices starts at the individual level. Without a strong foundation, the very structure manufacture and consumption would collapse due to a lack of natural resources.
Help Our Planet (HOP) Club at MVHS serves to promote environmentalism in youth-led programs and organizations, proving to my peers that where there is an idea, there is the possibility of action. Environmental conservation is my passion, the driving force behind many of my beliefs and daily routines, from reusing plastic bags, to taking two-minute showers. As the co-founder of my high school’s new recycling program, I not only see the waves of change in the school community, I see new bouts of inspiration and action. It only takes the courage and leadership of one student-led group to catalyze other ideas of change and foster a community that feeds off the creativity of each other. Although one recycling program cannot change the entire world, it can serve as the impetus for greater change, all the while promoting balance between the fast-paced world of today, and the awe of the environment.
