INTRODUCTION:
I carried out my environmental sustainability project in a school called Government Girls Junior Arabic School, located at Kasarau ward Dutse local government area opposite deputy governor’s office. The school had a heap of waste materials which has been posing a lot of environmental threats. And the refuse was closer to students’ classroom. More so since this is my place of primary assignment, I find it necessary to tackle this problem.
ACTIVITIES
1. I sensitized the principal, the teachers, and then the whole students on the need to keep and sustain our environment. This exercise was carried out on Friday 1st July 2011. The total number of people I spoke with was 257 students including some teachers. I enlightened them on the hazards of environmental ill-practices in the school which includes increase infant mortality and air pollution. I advised them to stop dumping wastes in the school compound but utilize waste bin collection systems – all classrooms must have their own waste basket which will be emptied into the bigger waste drum in the school at the close of each day.
In response, the school management unanimously agreed that, henceforth, no more dumping of refuse in the school compound. And they promised to actively participate in the sanitation exercise scheduled for the following Friday.

2. The environmental sanitation was carried out with the assistance of the teachers and students on the Friday 8th July 2011 – a week after the sensitization. We used tools like rakes to clear up the debris in a small gutter; other tools used were waste bags, baskets, shovels and brooms to pack the wastes outside the school where there was a JISEPA (Jigawa State Environmental Protection Agency) waste drum. All the wastes were packed out and the smelly spots were clean properly such that there were no more irritating odours in the school. At the end of the clean up, I got some refreshment for the students who participated just to appreciate their efforts.

CHALLENGES FACED

One of the difficulties I encountered was that a few of the teachers did not participate in the clean up with us. Another issue was that the students gave me tough time controlling them. They were simply too frisky about the whole thing and not minding the cautions in handling such toxic wastes. Also the tools were not enough for the work. But apart from these few hurdles, the project was an outstanding success.

SUSTAINABILITY PLAN

1. The school management now has an organized clean-up plan. Every Wednesday has been set aside for general clean up of the school.
2. There is punishment attached to any act of indiscriminate dumping of wastes in the school premises.

RECOMMENDATION

The school management should ensure that they are serious about their environmental rules in the school. I would also prefer that the JISEPA improve on their waste removal services, so that the waste drum outside of the school would turn into horrible dumpsite.
