My name is Alexander Hardt. I am 19 years old and I am a senior at high school in Germany. I was born in Kazakhstan, a former republic of the Soviet Union. Because of the fact that my parents are from German descent, they were given the opportunity to move back to Germany when I was 5 years old. I grew up in Wuppertal, a middle-size town in western Germany. Next summer I will be going to college in the United States as the first one in our family, which makes my parents very proud.

Because of the natural beauty of my hometown, I have been spending a lot of time in the wilderness and this fact made me very aware of the various dangers to nature and the importance of saving our earth. One thing I love to do is kayaking at the river "Wupper" in my local town. From time to time I have encountered a severe problem. Some areas of the river are filled with trash that people have thrown in the river thoughtlessly and with no doubt. Every time I am kayaking through a pile of trash I feel hurt and it makes me aware of the intolerance people have towards our natural environment.
We all live on one planet and we are all dependent on the resources the earth has to offer. We should be grateful and caring about the nature!

Therefore I started a project called "Wupperputz ", the cleaning of several parts of the local river under the motto "The Earth is our home, so help keeping it clean! " First I started to attract students from my high school to participate in my project, then friends and family so that I got a group of about 20 people together.
After 6 hours of cleaning the shores and the inside of the river, the project was done...but not once and for all!

As long as I encounter people who are unaware of the importance of the preservation of our natural resources, I am going to continue my work, so that in the future everybody will consider the earth as their "home".
