By starting the Green Team, I would definitely say that I have made a significant impact in driving energy efficiency & conservation, improving recycling efforts at my school and the way students practice sustainability. The school I attend has been around since the 1950's and hence is not fitted with the most environment-friendly equipment. Last year, by using information gathered through self-audits and evaluation, and collaborating with local companies like Duke Energy, my team and I were able to successfully help our school receive A/C and heating fixes, and better lighting for most of the its buildings. My goals of spreading awareness, implementing behavioral changes among members of the team and making our school environment-friendly have been assimilated beyond just what goes on during team meetings. Some of my team members are actually making changes to their individual lifestyles and I am proud that I was able to help them begin. This year, I have been able to sustain the team’s interest by involving them very early on in the planning stages for this year’s projects. I am also recruiting new members. We are working closely with our local county in their Solid Waste and Recycling Program to streamline and organize our schools recycling efforts which has not been very efficient according to the statistics that the County shared with our team. With the active involvement from our teacher-adviser and encouragement from my school authorities, we are currently working on developing a composting site in our school campus. We are also contemplating a cell phone recycling program that will help us raise funds for our school and team’s projects. The Green Team is certainly making an impact albeit slowly, on the community around us. My team members have been convinced that they need to start caring more about the environment.
