Why Recycle?
“The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a heap of debris located in the Pacific Ocean, is twice the size of Texas and weighs about 3.5 million pounds.” This is one of the shocking facts about our planet that has helped me realize that protecting the environment is a serious matter. During my freshman year in high school, I had a teacher that was strict about her assignments, projects, and, most of all, protecting the environment. She always conserved paper, took us on field trips about environmental issues, and even got us to participate in gathering recyclables around the school. At first, I hated having her as a teacher and being in her class. After a while though, I started to enjoy being in her class and I realized that she was not only making me into a much better student, but a better environmentalist. She taught me much more about the environment than I thought I would ever know. Most importantly, she taught me how each one of us, individually or as a group, can make a difference in preventing issues like the Great Pacific Garbage Patch from happening again in the future.
One school day, my teacher assigned her students to do a project to help contribute to earth week. As soon as I was informed that the project could have been anything the students would want to do, I eagerly looked forward to it. After having time to think, I decided to create a video about recycling as my project. I gathered up all my ideas and finally came up with what seemed like a humorous, yet influential, idea for my video. With a camcorder, a computer, and a few bottles and cans as props, I was able to finish the video in less than a month. I showed the video to my teacher to get her opinion about it, and she ended up loving it. She loved the video so much, she ended up putting it into an eco-rally that my school hosted. Not only did my friends find the video very entertaining, but about every other person who attended the eco-rally as well. The popularity of my video did not stop there. I decided to show the video to the film club at my school and to other teachers and classmates. I even decided to post the video on YouTube and Facebook to help publicize it on the Internet. After a couple of weeks, many people had seen my video, recognized me for it, and not only found it funny, but informative about recycling.
Completing my project not only made me somewhat popular, but it also encouraged me to continue pursuing my dream of becoming a filmmaker. Film has always been something I loved and appreciated. Watching movies is one of my favorite hobbies and has provided me with entertainment growing up. Seeing all the positive effects my video gave to people, I plan to become a filmmaker to continue to spread that same joy through out the world and create more entertaining forms of film. The project turned out to be a perfect opportunity to prepare being a filmmaker and allowed me to express my creativity and ideas in a positive and entertaining way, just like what a real filmmaker does.
Although my project has provided me with a variety of benefits, my main intention was to help people realize the importance of recycling and how easy it really is. Some people may think that placing a single bottle into a recycling bin won’t make a difference for the environment; but if every person were to think that way, the environment would be at a much horrible state than it is now. To prevent this from happening, I plan to create even more videos about recycling with the help of my friends. These videos, just like my first one, will demonstrate why recycling is important in amusing and imaginative ways. Hopefully, in the future, the videos will not only make an impact in recycling in my community, but of recycling around the world. For now though, I am glad to have participated in the protection of the environment in my community and to have my video turn out as a success. It has improved me as an environmentalist and has given me a good feeling, letting me know that every person who watched my video took in the message of why recycling is one of the best things that someone can do to protect the environment.
