Environmental Education Project

“Several heads are better than one”. This statement has never had more effect to me until I did the service learning project with my group. With splitting up into smaller groups so me and my partner could take on the kids at Wayne Middlle School in Erie Pennsylvania more effectively, to coming up with ideas for activities to teach them about the environment (that weren’t boring), we worked in a group and practiced constructive participation.
The service learning project I did reflected around the environmental issue recycling.
Recycling reduces the energy used and it costs less than making products out of raw materials.
With the increase of landfills and decrease of natural resources, recycling has become a major environmental concern. By recycling, we decrease pollution, maintain the amount of natural resources and energy used, and decrease the number of landfills.
My service learning group and I visited a middle school and talked to children about the recycling issues of today with the degradation of trees in the world. For a better understanding, did an activity and made recycled paper.
For starters I can continue doing what I’m doing. Learn more about the environment around me and do what I can to make it better, if it’s cleaning up or volunteering help for a neighbor I am doing what I can to further my personal goal.
I can’t do it all by myself so I could encourage others to get involved also. By doing this I am multiplying my help.
I used to be one of those people, before I started learning more about the environment around me and doing things to change and make it better. Before college I didn’t participate in any environmental improvement projects and I hardly knew what was going on with the environment since I have, I’ve gotten very accustomed to it.
Recycling was always something I grew up doing. My mother told me when you finished with a bottle or glass to put it in the blue bin with the recycling symbol so the environment wouldn’t suffer. Just as my mom told me I taught the kids at the middle school about this. We did a hands-on project and taught them the value of recycling.
I‘ve learned patience and how good it is to be prepared and organized. My partner and I did not really have any challenges or frustrations. We dealt with each issue mostly small as to getting supplies very calmly. Meeting up outside of class was not a problem to get prepared for out presentations to the kids. Teamwork played a big part in this project and me and my partner were very good at this.
Since I stared college I have been exposed to the environmental issues around me in my civil engagement class. I’ve learned a lot about the environment and the issues of present day.
I learned that children are very open to new things and learning to make the environment better is one thing that should be mentioned to each child just as it was mentioned to me. By encouraging a better environment to those around me I am helping to improve. If I continue this I know I can help the world be a better place, while learning more about the environment around me. With doing this I am also learning more about myself. As I learned in “The Quickening of America”, with the Living Democracy, there is no end. There is always room for development. It is always easier to stay the same than to change, but that's why I’m in college, to improve my skills. We learn by doing and by me reflecting, I can learn more about myself by practicing my skills and reflecting on my successes and failures.
