MY ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP PROJECT.

Environmental stewardship project involves environmental cleanup and conservation project. It is a project that see to the fact that our community is well kept; in the absence of infirmities or disorder.

I completed my project at a park called “RUMUOKWURUSHI PARK” and at a riverside near my yard. The park is a place where buses stop and trash most often are disposing wrongly. Sometimes, people have their rest under the buildings in the park. The riverside is rich in nutrient due to deposits of river materials at the banks. It is situated where industries are located.

I observed so many interesting plants and animals during my project. Animals like rats, millipedes, snakes live in trash as their habitat. Mosquitoes dominated the whole area. One of the snakes is green in color with white strips on its body. The rats feed on the trash and suddenly changes to a big rabbit. Plants like “dangoyaro” and “kukuru tree” grow very tall with green and broad leaves. The roots penetrate and grow deep into the soil. They do not die during harsh and dry weather. The plant seedlings are easy to carry and are planted separately.

I conducted trash cleanup and native tree planting. The trash cleanup was made possible through the help from my family, friends and teachers. Thorough plans and attention were given to weather reports. We were properly dressed with boots, gloves, hat and first aid kit was also available. Trucks were used to remove the trash from the park to a far distant place where it was recycled. Bottles, syringes, needles and other heavy equipment were handover to the proper authorities in the community. All the trash were carefully removed and the environment around the park was well swept and kept clean. In addition and just for the sake of having a neat looking park, we painted a good portion of the railing that surrounds most of the area a very hospitable shade of green. We also labeled the trashcans as to emphasize their existence.
I also embarked on native tree planting. A research was carried out on the internet to learn what trees are both native to and grow well in my community, tree seedlings was obtained from the local nursery who then gave me advice on planting and maintenance of the seedlings. I took permission from the owner of the land (riverside) near my yard. I cleared some little grasses around this area. The planting were done with one seed per hole of about 5 to 6 meter spacing. Watering the plants from the river is a mandatory duty to help in faster growth. I was unable to take photo because I do not have digital camera. The photo uploaded is not mine.

My intention and feelings for conducting this project cannot be overemphasized. I regarded it as part of my obligations in the community and most importantly, trash spoils nature’s beauty, kills and injures wildlife and leaches toxic chemicals into the air and environment thereby causing diseases and harmful effects to health. the trash cleanup stop pollution while native tress when fully grown stop global warming by reducing greenhouse gases, prevent soil and water erosion, produce oxygen and habitat for native wildlife which in turn promote good health to people and community.

In order to ensure long-term solution to environmental problem, trash cleanup must be a consistent routine where people are encourage cleaning up their environment. Strict rules and regulations should be given by government bodies to the community discouraging unhealthy disposal of trash. Central and strategic points should be assigned for disposing and dumping of trash for recycling. Industries should have a way of recycling trash and waste before disposal. Tree planting should be encouraged in our community while deforestation should stop in order to stop global warming and other harmful effects in the community. And also,To overcome today’s environmental problems we will need both understanding and moral fortitude to compensate for our genetically endowed predilection:1. The understanding that is needed is in part technological, in part economic, and in part an understanding of the human condition. Engineers must play a pivotal role in the solution of these problems – just as they did in their creation. However, for engineers to play this role, a major paradigm shift is needed. In the words of Albert Einstein, “The world we have created has problems that cannot be solved thinking the way we used to think when we created them”. Unfortunately, notwithstanding new ABET criteria, engineering programs rarely, if ever, require a course devoted entirely to the complexity of environmental consequences accompanying engineering decisions. It is true that general civil engineering curricula commonly require a course in environmental engineering. However, this course often centers on purely technical aspects of the treatment of water and wastewater with an occasionally diversion into air quality. Although sustainability has become a fashionable buzzword and many engineering programs are eager to attract research funds to address issues associated with green manufacturing, industrial ecology, etc., few programs have found it necessary to educate the undergraduate engineers who will comprise the majority of the future workforce in these pressing topics. Society can ill-afford engineers that have not been properly prepared to directly engage in the debates that form the basis for decisions with environmental consequences.

It is important to take care of the project area as it will help to ensure regular cleanliness and free from trash. The park is a relaxing center where people have their rest, so must be monitored regularly in order to stop pollution. The area where I planted trees should be safeguard and taken care of to stop people from destroying the trees. People should be taught on the necessity to keep the environment in good conditions. Regular watering and weeding should be given.

Apprentice Ecologist Initiative is an initiative that has help to rescue some of our environmental problems through its strategic projects, which among its goals, by elevating youth into leadership roles thus engaging them in environmental and social well being of our communities thereby improving local living conditions through action and activism. I must commend that Apprentice Ecologist Initiative is the best of its kind.

This is a good step toward taking part in environmental stewardship.
