Well, my project I is an eagle scout project. I planned to extend a small preserve located at The South Padre Island Convention Center (SPICC) at 7355 Padre Blvd, South Padre Island, TX, 78597 by planting: Tepejuague, Huisache, Ebony, Bottle Brush, Fiddlewood, Blue Mist, Butterfly Weed, Powderpuff, Lantana, and Chilie Pequin in a 35’ x 55’ area; to directly benefit neo tropical migrant birds and butterflies. Deforestation and pollution due to the tremendous growth of population in the Rio Grande Valley area has put the Valley’s environmental stability at risk. The SPICC whose role entails providing the facilities for volunteers to use, land on which the preserve is to be located, and upkeep so long as the preserve exists, agreed to help with this project in hopes that this project would help the birdwatcher community, native and non alike, enjoy themselves as well as help the environment. The project plans along the way changed a bit (finished the preserve came out to about 42'x50'), and somehow everything worked out just right, it was a bit of a challenge on my leadership abilities but we finished on time, March 30th, 2008, and all but 5 survived. Many more native plants begun to grow in the small preserve that helped provide a place for the birds during the fallout, and I am very proud of my accomplishment.
