The Green Cleaning Movement
Being “green” is defined as helping the environment and minimizing negative affects to the environment. At our school, being green is one of the main topics on today’s agendas. Much student support is shown towards the cause, along with help from staff and custodians.
As a member of the G.D.C.I Environmental Committee, chair of the G.D.C.I. Global Village Club, Envirothon competitor, and a student representative for The Town of Goderich Environmental Committee, I, and other students are continuing to make differences within our community.
Our school does not have a compost; neither does our town. I, and other environmentalists within our school, are currently raising awareness to this necessity. We are attempting to fundraise $40 000 to place a composter in the town. This is the largest project we have yet undertaken. Other projects included collecting garbage, and doing a school wide waste audit for several days. This waste audit required dedicated students, along with custodians, to sort through garbage and place recyclables in the recycling bin. Next year, special co-op courses are in place to raise awareness to the environment. This year, custodians, students, and staff also made it possible to have another forty-five blue boxes added to the collection to raise awareness to recycling.
The composter, along with many other smaller projects are currently underway.
