I live in an apartment in Seattle. I chose to clean up an open ground in my neighborhood. It seems like nobody had cleaned it for a very long time. Leaves and drainage spread on the street, and the branches were so sharp that they might hurt the passengers. Everyday when I pass here, I always felt it is dirty and full of garbage, but I never thought of cleaning it up.

Few weeks ago I saw a squirrel running across the street to eat popcorn spreading on the ground, a car went by and almost hit the squirrel. The scene was so thrilling that I decided to do something for the squirrels – provide a clean environment for them.

I started to clean up the yard and the street. I picked up lots of cans, plastic plates, and branches. Most of them are branches. At first, I picked up the garbage reluctantly because they are so dirty and wet. But gradually I feel cheerful for keeping the environment clean. Although the squirrels did not show up today, I felt like they were watching me and smiling at me. After gathering two bags of trash, it started to rain, and I stopped.

I hope my neighbors would start to pay attention to the environment in our neighborhood, so I can go to clean up other places farther.
