Recycling is important to me, and when I learn of a new way to recycle, I am more than happy to oblige. Something I recently learned is that wrapping paper is recyclable, a fact that I was oblivious of before. When I learned that our local recycling contractor would accept wrapping paper, I decided to try to make it known to my community, the city of Linwood, Kansas.
There are two large collection bins located near the local middle and elementary schools. These recycling bins allow the two schools to earn money from Deffenbaugh Recycling. The schools recycle as do residents of Linwood. While the dumpsters are used by many in the community, a vast majority of our community members think that only newspapers are allowed to be put into these containers for recycling. I wished to remedy this situation. I contacted Deffenbaugh and verified that they would accept used wrapping paper in the bins at the schools. I was informed that it was definitely acceptable.
It being Christmastime, I knew many people would have a great quantity of used wrapping paper lying around the house. I do not like it when people waste what can be recycled, so I decided to put up "Recycle your used wrapping paper" posters in two local businesses, the community library and the café. I thought these signs might possibly be ignored or not seen by enough people, so I also posted a sign on the recycling bin itself to alert people to the fact that wrapping paper can be recycled.
If people recycle their used wrapping paper, there will be two major benefits. The first is ecological. There will be less wrapping paper thrown into landfills and maybe a tree or two will be saved. The second important reason is that the local schools will be earning some money to help further the education of area students. In addition to traditional subjects, I hope that many students will also learn the value of recycling.
Recycling has always been important to me. I started a recycling a program at my middle school a couple years back, and I recycle at home.
