I removed invasive ivy and planted native plants in Meadowdale Beach Park, Edmonds, WA. I, with my scout troop #465, worked over 100 hours to plan and remove the ivy and insert the plants. We planted 5 vine maples, 5 western red cedars, 10 salmonberries, 5 snowberries, and 10 sword ferns. All of the plants were donated by Surface Water Management, a local nursery. This project made me feel very good about helping out the ecosystem. The park is a mile walk down to the beach through a deep forest. My family has walked this path many times when I was young. I wanted to give back to the park that had given me so many good memories. My scout troop will return to the area every year to make sure that it is working well and that the trees are growing tall. I feel that the Apprentice Ecologist Initiative is a unique organization in that it supports leadership and teaching people that if they lead other people to work together, they can make a greater influence and be more successful.
