South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project

I volunteered to help clean up, remove invasive weeds, and plant natives to restore tidal salt marsh habitat at this site. This property is not currently open to public access and clean-up efforts show that this site has accumulated a lot of large debris- Volunteers have removed more than 10,000 pounds of trash to date, as well as removed more than 5,000 pounds of invasive weeds and planted more than 4,000 native seedlings on site.

In this project I helped restore natural wetlands. The lands we cleaned up were filled with non-native plants (like fennel, mustard,
and thistle) and these plants were making it almost impossible for native plants to grow. These plants need a lot of water to survive so they were taking away water from the native plants. We tried to get rid of these plants by weeding them. The group I was with ended up removing 8 large bags of non-native plants, which was a lot.
