For a few hours twice a month a group of students and I meet at a local park and begin working. With garbage bags in hand and smiles on our faces we worked to remove the garbage, planted new trees, and cleaned the park trails for people to enjoy. As a result, students were brought together to better the community.
Not only does litter look bad but it destroys the planet. By attracting animals that carry disease it can become dangerous when around defenseless children. But the worst thing we saw were the amount of cigarette butts--these are extremely bad for the environment because they are highly flammable and are the cause for many fires.
As we went to different parks in the area we brought awareness to the issue of littering. It also brought the community together and created a feeling of responsibility for reducing overall waste.
