My parents always taught me to leave an area better than I found it. On brisks walks with my mom I often observe her stop to pick up any trash that she comes across. Her devotion to respecting the environment has impacted me by instilling an understanding of the importance of such actions in me. I value the environment and world daily to minimize my carbon footprint. I am planning on studying environmental science in college. My commitment to environmental issues and my pride in my school are what motivated me to carry out a campus cleanup project.
I take pride in the beautiful campus of my high school. It is a large campus in the middle of Greensboro, NC with 12 old buildings spread across a campus that is covered in trees. It's heartbreaking to see the apathy my peers who leave trash scattered across the halls and breezeways, and even harder to see the bystanders who ignore it. In my junior year, I decided that enough was enough. I began to plan a campus clean up to tackle the problem hands-on and raise awareness. I had to observe the areas of campus where littering was the worst, map out which areas to focus on, gather supplies such as trash bags and gloves, and most importantly, get the word out to my peers. When the day came, a classroom full of fellow students showed up like an eager army ready to attack the trash problem that plagued our campus. We split into groups and spread out, trash bags in hand. Over the course of 2 hours we were able to fill over a dozen trash bags. Our campus looked better than ever, and I am so proud of what we were able to accomplish together. It united many students toward a common cause that affected each and every one of us. We all came to understand the value of having pride in taking care of our surroundings. Because I knew that the trash problem at my school was likely to continue, I worked with other students to raise awareness by displaying a public service announcement to force people to really think about their habits and the state of their surroundings. In my senior year I continue work to improve the problem and I am currently planning another clean up that will hopefully become an annual event after I graduate. It is very important to carry out projects like these because the environment is facing irreversable damage, but I can still fight for the things that I possess the power to change. A school campus is especially important to care for because it is the place where young minds become molded and grow. Setting a positive example of how to treat one's surroundings on a college campus may create values that follow students for the rest of their lives.
This project made me become very conscious of the way people treat their surroundings everywhere. By calling attention to this and showing others what steps can be taken to improve our world I believe I have allowed others to become conscious of it as well. I advocate for limited single-use plastic in daily life in hopes that others will do the same.
When leadership brings dedicated and passionate people together, great steps are made to solve problems. I will continue to work with others to make a positive impact on the world and the people in it.
