Our wilderness project took place in Tacony Creek Park in Philadelphia. It was Saturday morning when my cousins and I went to clean up Tacony Creek Park.
As we walked, Brian, the older of the two, laughed at the idea of the world being a clean place. He said, "I don't think the world can ever be clean." I asked why and he replied, "there's too much trash!" And then smiled at the simplicity of the answer. I figured that he was still young and only looking at the downside of things but when we reached the park, it seemed that he was right about the too much trash part. We found a good amount of trash in the park.
The section that we decided to clean up was littered with pieces of paper, used napkins, candy wrappers, soft drink cups and ripped plastic bags. We started around eleven in the morning and were done by twelve-thirty. This was the first experience that we had doing any sort of wilderness project. My cousins were hesitant at first, but it didn't take long for them to get into it.
Altogether, we had fun cleaning up the park and enjoying the beautiful day. Organizing such parties to clean up litter in parks is a great way to help sanitize our environment. However, it would be even better if trash was not littered in the first place. Placing garbage cans in park areas may help by providing a place for visitors to dispose their trash, instead of just carelessly tossing it aside. Putting up signs encouraging visitors to not litter may also help.
Overall, this project was a fun and unique experience. When we first started, we were doubtful and had few expectations. As we finished the project, however, it was a completely different story; we left knowing that we made Tacony Creek Park a little bit cleaner.
