Green Birthday: Eco Notebook Making Workshop
According to statistics, forests are being cut and trees are being felled at an unimaginable rate of 100 acres per minute to produce paper which is normally used and disposed with no much thought. True enough, most of the solid wastes seen in offices, particularly in universities and colleges, are papers. And did you know that paper accounts for one-fourth of the volume of waste in landfills? When it breaks down in a landfill, it converts to methane, which produces twenty times more greenhouse-gas emissions than carbon dioxide.
This mere knowledge alone inspires the creation and use of eco-notebooks. The idea is to reuse the clean sides of scrap paper, creatively stack and stitch them together to form and even customize notebooks that not only intend to reduce much of the solid waste problem but also economically help students especially in public schools with the acquisition of their school materials. This project thus strongly campaigns for recycling to become an integral part of the lifestyles of these school students, intending to let the eco-notebooks go a long way with their educational journey.
Recycling is one of the actions initiated to mitigate the destruction caused to the environment by excessive and improper consumption. Consequently, a lot of recycling approaches are introduced in order to widen the scope of combating environment obliteration. One of which is the foundation of Project NOWTBUKS.
Bringing the Kids Go Green banner, Project NOWTBUKS (NOW it the Time to Build Up Kids for Sustainability) is a collaborative initiative conceptualized and run by Industrial Engineering students of CIT University that nurtures young minds on how to think, live and stay green inculcating in the kids their vital role in preserving and protecting the environment through engaging them in a simple activity as transforming scrap papers and other materials into utilizable notebooks --- the eco-notebooks.
1. Orient the participants about the advocacies and directions of Project NOWTBUKS in conducting sustainable projects and activities that promote environment protection and conservation
2. Deepen the knowledge of the students about their vital role in protecting of the environment and transform young minds to become eco-vanguards
Green Birthday: Eco Notebook Making Workshop is a campaign of the Project NOWTBUKS(NOW is the Time to Build Up Kids for Sustainability) under the organization of Industrial Engineering Council with the partnership of Supreme Student Government. This was held at CIT University Audio Visual Room from 8:00 AM to 12NN, March 7, 2015.
This workshop campaigns 80 CWTS students about Environmental Awareness and Youth Empowerment. This workshop let the CWTS students know the importance of protecting the environment in a simple way through making Eco Notebooks. There’s a lot of fun filled activities and energizer conducted in the workshop. Well, the program flow started with GTKY (Getting To Know You). Since not all the participants and facilitators were not acquainted with each other, GTKY activity were conducted.CWTS students were not just aware about the environment protection but also they were have fun and they were empowered to share their ideas on how to make an Eco Notebook.
After the GTKY, facilitators and I help the CWTS students on how to make their own personalize eco notebook. Well, there was a smile painted in my heart when I saw them happy in making the eco notebooks. After the eco notebook making session, there's a covenant signing happened which has a goal to let the participants sustain the Project NOWTBUKS through spreading their learnings in the workshop. This workshop is not just a one day event but a life changing event because this event empowered 80 students to make a very impactful and positive change in our world.
