The Apprentice Ecologist is an amazing opportunity that I would wish to participate in and I would love to be apart of. I am, if I would say so myself, an exemplary student in school, I play the clarinet in the school band, and would like to go into politics or into law. I do hope to make a difference in this society once I'm older, I want good people to have the rights they deserve and live in a better society. Many changes can be done to improve this country for the better and I would like to be the one to push them forward.
The Aspen Challenge is a rather primitive contest in the Los Angeles Unified School district. The school I go to, Valley Academy of Arts and Sciences located in Granada Hills California, has been opened for a handful of years, the past year the Aspen Challenge arrived at our school. This challenge was presented to seventeen schools across LAUSD. With a wide variety of challenges that we're giving to us, my school with a team of 8 students including myself, took upon our selfs to try and combat the battle of bettering public health in our community. Now, my team and I saw public health as something that isn't one specific area, it ranges from safe sex, accessibility, clean parks and air, it can be anything pertaining to bettering the human life.
Lifecycle ~ Eat healthy, Be active, Choose to live Forward. Over many long tedious weeks we cam up with three long term projects which include launching our own mobilized farmers market to bring locally grown organic produce to communities that don't have the access also to little to no cost, to launch a application that would be available to Apple devices at first and later on androids and the app will be able to give people healthy recipes, quick exercises, and routs (bus routs also) to healthy stores and farmers markets, and also a way to track your progress, and our last long term goal is hopefully to establish our selfs as a non profit in the near future.
Through the course of the competition we organized a few community events, with community partners, a community dinner held for members of the community where we taught people how to prepare healthy meals with a limited amount of time with the help of a few teachers at our school that had a few tricks up their sleeves and we hosted healthy kids day at a non-for-profit organization in Panorama City which is categorized as a food swamp, a food swamp is an area that has liquor stores and corner stores instead of a whole foods market or a smart and final, we gave the children a yoga lesson and played fun interactive games to teach the children the differences between junk food and healthy alternatives.
This project fought fourth a new light into what I want to do with my life in the future, because actually changing people's life for the better brings a joy that is like none other. Now, once the competition ended and we presented our solutions to a panel of judges and awaited a few agonizing minutes, our school was the victor. As our prize our team of eight, our coach, and principle were flown out to Aspen, Colorado to present our ideas to a prestigious group of people and learn from some of the best minds in the world like Hillary Clinton and Ariana Huffington. The philosophy we have forged for Lifecycle is that once we help people, and educate them in what truly is a healthy lifestyle, people will start taking better care of the earth we live on. We as lifecycle have put it upon our selfs to start our own class at our school to continue our efforts and as of the date of December 12th 2014 we are in the process of starting a garden at our school and pattering with a nearby middle school to help bring fresh produce to people.
