I have recently adopted an all organic and GMO-free diet, which has opened my eyes to the importance of the environment. I live in Oklahoma City. Oklahoma City, being the largest city in Oklahoma, naturally gets a lot of traffic in its parks and playgrounds. However, with that traffic comes trash. The scenery of our local parks is littered with empty water bottles and half-eaten bags of chips. I felt obligated to clean up the very same parks I used to play at when I was younger, not only to benefit the environment but also the children.
The park I helped to clean up is called Seller’s Park. It is located in a neighbor just across the street from where I grew up. Seller’s Park has a playground, a community center, a basketball court, and a sprayground, making it a popular spot for kids’ birthday parties. Unfortunately, when the party ends the streamers and Styrofoam cups remain I, along with a few of my friends, went to the park for a few afternoons over a couple weeks to collect trash. Some things, such as water bottles and paper bags, we were able to recycle. Other things, like a discarded flip flop, we threw away.
Cleaning up the park has been fulfilling in more ways than one. Of course it’s nice to know that the park is a safer place for children to play on, but I’ve also noticed that other people have taken an interest in the environment. Sometimes kids would see us and begin picking up trash as well. Making any sort of impact on others is highly rewarding, and it will hopefully inspire them to be more conscientious of the environment in their own lives. Thanks to the Nicodemus Apprentice Ecologist Project, I am more motivated than ever to make a difference in my community.
