I grew up in the Arkansas River Valley area and have always loved hiking and camping in the surrounding mountains. I do get offended when I think people don’t have the respect for nature that I believe they should.
Lee Creek is a well sized creek that eventually joins with the Arkansas River. The specific area that I cleaned up is popular for hiking, camping, fishing, and swimming, though mostly just known to locals. Large bluffs overlook the creek and its many clear, deep pools. The surrounding forests are filled with evergreens and oak trees and devoid of underbrush, creating beautiful hiking areas. Small trails can be found throughout the area along the creek, the trails have always been in very good shape and for the most part clear of trash. Most of the trash I picked up was along the Creek’s shores, probably because it is the area most frequented by people. I believe the isolation of the area contributes to the buildup of trash since there are no trash cans or convenient way of disposing of garbage.
Taking care of this area, keeping it as pristine as possible will show future visitors that nature is beautiful and up to people to keep it so, since it is people that take away from the beauty of nature. Hopefully, cleaning the Creek will inspire others to pick up their trash and any trash that they see to insure that Lee Creek’s beauty isn’t spoiled.
My Apprentice Scholarship project was simple, however, it was rewarding and something I would be happy to do again.
