In a world where the average person eliminates 1 ounce of fecal waste per 12 pounds of body weight per day and the average American throws away about 4 and a half pounds of trash per day, it is essential that each person takes responsibility for their actions. There are approximately 6,840,507,000 people in the world. If each person were to dedicate just 1 minute to helping clean their environment, it would total 114,008,450 hours of service! We could actually change the direction we are headed in and inspire continued service. These facts inspired my move to help clean up parks in my neighborhood. I along with a group of about ten volunteers, all Howard University students, went to the park just across the street from our campus, and began picking up trash. Just in one day, we filled two extra-large garbage bags; we even replaced the bags in the park’s garbage bins, which were full to capacity. This is just the start of a lifetime of service and I hope our story will inspire people all over the world to get involved with cleaning up their neighborhoods.
