The Pond
I have to say that this was the most fun I have had doing something for a scholarship. My best friend, Melissa, and I were trying to figure out what I was going to do for this scholarship when we noticed that her grandparents’ pond had not been cleaned out in some time. So we decided that that was going to be my project. So I rustled up some friends and we decided to make an event out of it. Myself and six other friends focused on three main areas of the pond; the reeds all around the pond, the dock and the trees that had dead branches on them.
The reeds were the hardest part of this whole project. There were four patches of them and each measuring at least ten feet in diameter and ranging from six inches to four feet deep. This meant that we had to wear rubber waders which were really cool because the water was cold but we did not have to get wet. We decided to pull up the reeds because they did not look attractive and her grandparents rent the pond out for weddings and senior pictures. So I assigned this project to me and my friend, Steven. We had a blast, except for the crawdads that kept biting out boots.
Then was the job of doing the dock, which had been covered in leaves and had a hole in it. That job was given to Melissa, Ben, and Isaac. Melissa raked up all the leaves and put them into the garden waste bin that we got for this particular project. She also went around raking up any other leaves or branches that happened to be laying on the ground. While she was doing this, Ben and Isaac got some hammers and pry bars and started to take up the old dock. Then they screwed in the new boards after water sealing them. The dock looked new again.
The final job to be assigned was the Palm and Willow trees that were scattered around the pond area. The Palm trees has many dead branches on them and so I gave that job to Janelle, for they were mini-Palm trees and she is kind of short and does not like ladders. The Willow trees job was assigned to Risty. His job was to use the ladder and a pair of tree sheers and trim the dead branches off of the Willow trees. They looked so beautiful even though they did not have any leaves on them.
This whole project made the pond look so beautiful and I cannot wait to go back there in the Spring and plant some flowers and watch them be able to bloom there by the pond.
