Our project was Keeping Denton Beautiful. I attend Texas Woman’s University. I am a member of a volunteer organization called Helping Hands. This is a non-profit student organization that reaches out to the school and community. We help wherever we are needed and are always searching for new ways to make a difference in our small corner of the world. For the trash clean-up project 2009, we cleaned up trash all across the community. We separated into groups in order to cover a larger diameter. My group was stationed near the railroad. It was inspiring and admittedly a little surprising to see how many honks of support and people who stopped to help as much as they could to help before going back on their way. Helping Hands is a Center for Student Development (CSD) sponsored student organization dedicated to the support of Texas Woman's University students interested in learning about volunteerism and participating in community service. Our goal is to help students in their personal growth by making a difference in our community! Helping Hands plans and sponsors service projects and special events throughout the year. You can be a part of the planning process or just participate in TWU Helping Hands-sponsored activities. Students participate in a variety of group projects with their fellow students including working with children at Cumberland Presbyterian Children's Home, beautifying the city with Keep Denton Beautiful, visiting the residents at local nursing homes, and assisting with a variety of community events and agencies. This project was personally rewarding. I didn’t really think so when I had to wake up at 6:00am that morning, the chaos of trying to get everyone where they were supposed to be, and getting to the work site. Whoever, actually working and knowing that I was helping the community was reason enough for me. It was well worth everything. I would happily do this project again and look forward to the next one!
