I have completed my community service of 15 hours. From July 28 until now, my family and I would walk around our neighborhood, to nearby parks especially Steilacoom Park because of the children's playground and clean the play areas as my 2 year old son would play. We found all sorts of garbage. Straws, candy wrappers, hair clips, cigarette butts, even Q-tips, broken glass was the worst I saw. It's amazing because nearby there are metal garbage cans in the park. Other children would sometimes ask me what I was doing and some parents would glance our way. I couldn't help but explain in hopes of bringing awareness. My requirement is to serve in Washington state, but we recently took a trip to Seaside, Oregon and couldn't help but notice the same things, empty potato chip bags, candy wrappings, chicken bones, cigarette butts, soda cans, etc as we walked along the sandy beach. Before, this probably wouldn't have affected me as much.
