During my senior year at Whites Creek High School, one of the classes I took was Scientific Research. This class studied a variety of different subjects that focused on environmental science, such as the dependence on oil and the importance of recycling. Our class did many different projects, but one that stood out the most was a recycling project that eventually involved the entire school.
After many guest speakers and countless notes later, our Scientific Research class realized that humans’ impact on the environment was astounding. Even the river next to our school was considered too polluted to be used as a source of drinking water. Our school had done many different things such as Cobra Pride day, when a couple students would stay after school and clean up the campus.
Staying after school is not easy for every student. Our school highly depends on buses for transportation. A project during school would have a lot more participation, so we decided to start a recycling initiative.
As many know, schools use a lot of paper; plastic (such as drinking bottles) are also heavily used. Our Scientific Research class, along with Lifeskills and Student Government Association, put together a plan for this recycling project. After contacting a few people, we were recognized for the efforts we were willing to make.
On November 20, 2009, an assembly was held at Whites Creek High School. At this assembly, many environmentalists attended. At this assembly, Whites Creek received over 100 recycling bins. We would now be actively recycling paper and plastic on a daily basis.
Every week, students from the Lifeskills Class would collect the bins and put the trash in the larger receptacle beside the school. However, this was not the end to our “master plan.” A school can easily recycle paper and plastic… but what about other products? What about food?
This project is not currently completed. The fall/winter plan was to recycle paper and plastic. By the spring, we hope that Whites Creek will have a recycling area in the parking lot for the public to use. Also, the Environmental Science class offered next semester plans to finish the project by recycling food. Whites Creek plans to start trench composting by using leftover food from the cafeteria. The fertilizer made from this should be used to fertilize the raised-bed gardens that will be started in the spring.
