The local Kiwanis Club (“a global organization dedicated to changing the world one community at a time”) held its annual Kiwanis Kanal Klean-Up on November 14th, 2009. The local Key Clubs in the area were invited to join the group with their plight and thankfully Northeast High School Key Club was one of the ones invited. Our group began the demanding task of cleaning up the lengthy canal located near Oriole Elementary School at 8:00 am sharp. Our group was made up of many older Kiwanis volunteer who refused to allow their age to prevent them from helping the environment. From beer bottles and soda cans, to pipes and random car scrap metal the Krew worked diligently to clear up the banks of the canal. The older men even got into a little boat and scooped trash out of the lake. We enjoyed working in the morning breeze, laughing and joking to pass the time. Afterward, at a little after 1:00 pm we were satisfied with our work and admired the newly clean banks. We left the canal feeling like we made a big difference and knew that if it could that it and the animals that survived off of it would thank us.
