Hurricane Relief:
I love giving back to the community and what better way can a person do that by community service. I have been apart of many organizations and there main objective is building leaders and participating in community service. Organizations such as Jack and Jill of America, Inc., Culturama, Youth Leadership Mobile, and Teen Board engaging high school students to work with others. I have more than one experience that I enjoyed and it was involved with Jack and Jill of America, Inc. Throughout 2005-2006 Jack and Jill helped many churches with Hurricane Katrina. From doing a clothes drive to cooking for people who came all the way from New York for an alternative Spring Break in helping victims. It was interesting to talk to one of the participants and I remember she said she didnâ€™t realize that Hurricane Katrina didnâ€™t just affect New Orleans it affected the whole gulf coast region from almost Florida to Texas. She said that media didnâ€™t expose the widespread damage created. Another one of my favorite memories was speaking to the head of the clothes and food drive chairman. He explained to me that he wish people who were donating items would not give away torn up and raggedy items (which many people were doing). He said that these people are evacuees not homeless, yes they did lose many things belongings but they donâ€™t deserve items that will be useless in the end. Many people were ignorant to the fact that these people lost more that material things they lost items. I wanted to participate and help with as much as I could and I made sure I did.
