Nicodemus Wilderness Project- Project To Save The Earth.
My name is Elochukwu. I was born on the 12th of July 1994 into a family of five, I am the second child also the second boy. I am 5’7" and currently in the 12th grade of Rowan County High School, Morehead, KY. I choose to do this project because of my love and value for the earth which is on the verge of extinction and I find it my duty and right to protect. I also did this project because of the scholarship money available which I need to complete my college education.
My project was conducted in the garden on plants and weeds. I also conducted it at home because change starts from the little things we do in our personal life and change also starts from small units such as family. The area where I carried out my project on the plants is not a big area, surrounded by weeds, dirty and bushy. The second area of my project was at home in the kitchen and sitting room. I educated my family on the importance of plants and the negative effects of global warming. I also cut back on the use of waste-full energy by turning off and fixing leaking pipes.
My project was done by me with help from my family. I weeded the garden so that the native plants could grow and flourish. I also watered the plants which is an important nutrient of the plants food for growth. The soil in the garden was not fertile, so I replaced the soil with a more fertile soil so the plants could have all the required nutrients for growth. Also, some of the plants in the garden were dead so I bought some native plants from the local grocery and planted it in the soil with appropriate spacing in-between for aeration. I also picked up dirt from the garden surrounding.
My second step to reduce global warming and emissions of toxic gases was carried out at home on my family. To educate my family, I planned out the discussion by going to the internet to collect facts about global warming and also some examples and steps to cut down emission of toxic gases. I also got a video by Al-Gore which talks about how fight to protect the earth. The video also showed prove that the earth is getting hotter. I played the video for my whole family on a Sunday afternoon while everyone was at home. They were excited and promised to carry put steps with me to prevent global warming. So, we fixed the leaking pipes at home to reduce energy which is used to pump water to our house. We also unplugged our phone chargers from the outlet when not in use. We cut down on our power usage for a month by not using the washing machine, dish washer and the cloth dryer. We bought more earth friendly bulbs instead of the dim old-school lighting we had. That was not all we did; because we drink bottled water, we did not throw away the bottles like we always, instead we recycled them. I was very happy at the outcome because my family was interested and we cut down on the emissions of harmful gases.
I think it is important to take care of the garden because the plants need a good home to live in, grow and flourish. It is also important to take care of the leaking pipes because it cuts down on the energy required to pump water to the house. My project benefits the society and the environment because it helps protect our plants from harm-full rays of the sun, which prepares the future and maintains a good environment due to clean-up of the trash for our future generations.
This project has enriched me because it enlightened me that people could be so co-operative and helpful. It has enriched me with joy because I am happy that I cut back on the emission of harmful gases. It inspires me to continue in the path of educating people because the heart of man is willing to accept change if only it is spoken to. I hope that with this essay my love for the earth will be shown and I might be awarded the scholarship. Thank you.
