My initial project’s plan was based on cleaning just a small sector of the river behind our school. However, I wanted to make more of an impact. So, after months of essay writing and research, I applied and was awarded community service grants from Lowe’s for 10,000 dollars and Timberland for 2500 dollars. Thus, I was able to purchase more resources in order to extend our project by over a mile. Not only did the large group of students beautify the Hackensack River area and restore a healthier environment for wildlife to thrive, we also launched an educational outreach program in which I presented our project at the New Jersey GreenFest, an environmental exhibition featuring celebrity activists such as Bill Nye the Science Guy and Ed Begley Jr. We spoke to over 250 NJ residents who became educated and inspired by what we were doing in our community. I was also featured on statewide television and in the state's largest newspaper, the Bergen Record. Through print and broadcast news, I was able to communicate and reach out to the entire state to motivate more kids to get involved by cleaning up their communities as well. The Hackensack River is a vital resource to our heavily urban community as it is one of the last few green spaces and through this project, there is hope that it will have a much brighter future.
