As a junior in high school, I was concerned about the lack of "Going Green" activities my school was participating in. For some reason, the administration has yet to approve a recycling project, yet we've been talking about it for the past three years. I decided, as a true Key Clubber, to take some action.
We formed a partnership with the Audubon Society and they contacted us, letting us knowing that they would want us to help with a clean up. I contacted all of our Key Club members to inform them of this project we would be working on. We would spend four hours on a Saturday afternoon cleaning up the Brookside Preserve, which was about a two-minute drive from our school campus.
This area, dense with trees, was known for being the site of all the nightly activities that the bad high school students engaged in. In the preserve, we found numerous beer bottles and tons of plastic wraps, which we ended up chucking. There was a lot of broken glass and even roof shingles, and little objects that looked like charcoal. We were later told by the lady in charge that they were remains of old buildings that used to be there. Moreover, we found a ton of empty snack bags, even a Doritos bag that had the most awkward design to it. We figured it must have been from at least ten years ago, it was so old. We had 20 Key Clubbers join us in this activity; running around the preserve, jumping into the brook that ran across it, and looking under the small boardwalks for garbage to dispose.
At the end of the four-hour cleaning period, we had collected over twelve heavy-duty black garbage bags filled with unwanted material and trash. The autobaun society was thrilled that the preserve looked so clean after our combined efforts. It is with this project that the society was able to then host an event called a “Walk in the Woods” a month later.
The gorgeous preserve, home to many different animals and plant species, was finally cleared of the mounds of garbage that inconsiderate people kept throwing in there. Our continued efforts to keep the undeveloped land clean will help the future generations appreciate its beauty.
