Nicodemus Wilderness Project -- Global Registry of Apprentice Ecologists

My parents own approximately 80 hectares of land in Northern Wisconsin that was once a rich biodiverse ecosystem, until a paper company clear cut it prior to my family's purchase. Over the years we have consistently planted native trees on it every spring in order to create a more diverse forest and promote the growth of some of the hardwoods that the land desperately needs. This spring was no different, my parents gave me a list of trees offered at the local County Extension office, and I did some research and picked out the native species that would do well in the type of soil and surroundings available. There were some pine, cedar, oak, spruce, and a few native shrubs that were fruit bearing and would be a welcome food source for wildlife. We try to plant 500 every year, and this year was no different. The funding for the trees all came from my parents, to which I was grateful, and then we three, as well as my grandmother, put in the labor and planted all these beautiful trees. I look forward to seeing them grow, as the ones we planted on the first year already tower above me.
