Helping the environment has always been one of my goals, not to get recognition and certainly not to get money; but just for the simple fact that everyone deserves to live in a healthier and cleaner place. Besides, helping the environment is actually for oneself, also it affects everyone; and society sees these kinds of projects as a sacrifice, which they really aren’t because we should all be doing small things to fix our world.
This project, which I involved my best friends, was also involved with my high school. The school adopted a road in our neighborhood; and our job was to take care of it and at least one a month we cleaned it up. Of course, the first clean up was the longest and most shocking. This road of ours was of busy transit and being from Miami, it has vegetation on the sidewalks. The things that the other volunteers and myself found, were eye opening, to the fact of how mistreated that road had been. We found a range of things, from metal and broken glass to clothing and old broken earphones. It took us several hours to clean our road, but we had an amazing time cleaning it. In my opinion this is one of the best ways to volunteer, with one’s friends. We had found a couple of shopping carts, which were helpful into carrying the heavy trash bags. In the end with had many bags and a clean road. After this job well done, people started to hear about our project and decided they wanted to be part of the adventure as well. In the end, we had many volunteers, which helped keep the road clean for the entire year.
Now I’m off in college and I’m happy to say that the project still lives on, the younger class is now taking good care of our road. I hope that this road stays clean for several years and it becomes a tradition for the newly seniors to take on this wonderful adventure. Now for my part, I’m studying in New York City in my dream school, with a new adventure but the same goal in mind. I’m starting to study environmental studies, and I couldn’t be more thrilled; I can finally help on a bigger scale. And although, like I mentioned before, I did not do this project for the money; it would certainly help my education extremely; to the point that I don’t think many people can understand.
