On December 29, 2007, my husband, Andrew, and I went out and collected trash. This isn’t anything new for us, but it is the first time we took pictures of it. There is a place near our apartment that allows water to drain off the various locations and flow to a more suitable spot. There’s lots of wildlife that lives in that drainage ditch such as fish, frogs, newts, as well as four legged creatures. Since these animals call that ditch home, we felt it would be beneficial to them to live in a clean environment, free of trash. We’ve been planning this for a while but since it’s winter, it took this opportunity to arise in order for us to get moving.
In the past, we have taken a lot of canoe trips around the local lakes near our hometowns. We always bring a bucket for trash and end up with the trash overflowing into the bottom of our canoe. We don’t really mind that much because it makes the lake so much more enjoyable. I think that’s the same as the drainage ditch. True, most people don’t pause to look into the ditch they’re passing over, but if they did, they would see it overflowed with trash. That can become dangerous because if there is a big rain, all that trash is washed away with the water and since the water goes through really small pipes sometimes, that can cause the water to back up and flood. Therefore, a clean drainage ditch is much more enjoyable.
Most of the trash we found was empty fast food wrappers and soda cans. We also found a lot of food containers and litter of the paper variety. It’s sad to see that this is really how people feel about our environment. They don’t care enough to hold onto their trash long enough to find a trash can or wait until they get home to throw it away. It’s nice to see a place that is free of trash. It’s even nicer to know that I had something to do with it. The nicest thing, however, is to know that we are not alone in this effort to preserve the beauty of our planet, even if it’s one drainage ditch at a time.
