Nicodemus Wilderness Project -- Global Registry of Apprentice Ecologists

Noticing that Bishop DuBourg High School had recycling programs for cardboard, aluminum and paper but not plastic, I decided to start a project to recycle plastic bottles at my school. I convinced two of my friends to join me on this project by researching, organizing, advertising, and operating a successful recycling campaign while building skills that would help us the rest of our lives.
We started a program titled â€œRace for Recyclingâ€ because of an overflow of plastic bottles being discarded with our common trash that would eventually end up in landfills taking years to decompose. A goal of this project was to initiate it without any cost to the school and was accomplished because of contacts made with national companies.
Our project was started by performing research on global warming, companies that recycle plastic, the costs of recycling, and common methods of recycling. After an exhaustive search of calling and e-mailing numerous companies, it was discovered that there is no economic value in plastic recycling. It was decided that the most effective way to accomplish our task would be self labor to collect and transport the plastic to a nearby recycling center twice each week. The project was organized by listing the tasks necessary to complete our project. The first task was to get bins supplied to us at no cost. This was accomplished by contacting numerous companies and making contact with two regional sales managers from W.W.Grainger Inc, and Corporate Express who sponsored our project by donating supplies.
