For Years the large ecological center enclosed by Connetquot high school has remained a desolate area. Once, a natural and beautiful part of the high school this area has remained untouched in years. The goal of this project was to reinvigorate the natural beauty of this area by cleaning up the overgrowth and building a path so students could enjoy the area during the school day.
There were two parts to this project. The first was to clean up the already existing area. Clean up the litter that had accumulated as well as the dead plants. Second was to install the walk way. We decided to use crushed stone inside a wood barrier. Both the wood and stone would be environmentally friendly and would also last for several years without maintenance.
The final step of this project is to ensure the lasting beauty of the area. In the spring we plan to plant trees and flowers. We will try to raise money to buy fish to put in the ponds. The indigenous plants will be labeled so the biology classes can use the area for learning.
I completed this project before learning about the Apprentice Ecologist Initiative. I felt great upon completion of this project and it is great to learn that there are others who are working on projects similar to mine.
